Beginning Sound Activities for Toddlers

Last week on Facebook, I shared a picture of Otto going through our beginning sound books (b, m, t, p, d). He was very interested, had already gone through a few books earlier, and then went through each again 2-3 times in one sitting.

The books are designed to help toddlers learn the phonetic sounds and broaden their vocabulary. The letters m, p, t, d, and b are the sounds most children naturally learn first, so that’s what I started with.

Each book has 6 pages with one picture per page. The pictures are of one item with little to no background images that would be distracting. I got mine mostly out of magazines. The words all start with their phonetic sounds, but don’t have consonant blends (like drum, tree, chair, brick, etc).

Another activity I’ve started to do with Otto is to have a beginning sounds basket with items starting with each beginning sound. Right now we have a ‘b’ basket on the shelf.

    Q : why does montessori method use lower case letters?
    And this is a great idea. Letter recognition. Could you
    Ialso share how you present this to Otto? Thanks

      Montessori starts with the lower case letter first because in one paragraph you I might write an upper case letter 3-5 times. Case in point I just wrote 1 uppercase letter in the last sentence and 90 lower case letters. You write lower case 99% more.

    This has been such a great inspiration for us. Many thanks for sharing!! And I am also curious, why does the Montessori method start with lower case. Is it because of the greater effort the child has to do when tracing letters?

      Honestly…I don’t know. Perhaps because most words are written in lower case and that’s what the child will read most of the time? Hmm…something to find out.

    Hello;
    this is the first time I visit your blog and it is very interesting. I am wondering when can I start such activities?

    Hi Jessica,

    Very nice books – I’ve done something similar myself, but actually printed the word underneath each picture. Is this considered a no-no by Montessori principles or is it o.k.?
