Montessori Fall-Inspired Activities

It’s been a rough month or so with Otto teething and having an ear infection, but we’re beginning to sleep a little more around here. Thank goodness! Mama can only go on 4-5 hours of sleep so long.

We’ve been enjoying our more formal school times and have been keeping up (for the most part) with school Monday – Thursday. (I choose Friday to be our off day. It gives us a little break and time to check up on household stuff…you know like laundry continues to grow. 😉 )

We finished our dinosaur theme and I’m planning on compiling a post with all our dinosaur themed activities soon. While I’m preparing our next theme, we’re taking a little detour into fall inspired activities.

Fall is most definitely my favorite season of the year and despite the warm spell we had this week, we’re enjoying the cooler weather and the trees changing colors.

Our fall-inspired work:

A Nature Basket with a Magnifying Glass

Making Patterns*

Tonging Peach Pits

Nesting Boxes

Memory Game* – This was Joey’s first time playing a memory game and he loves it!

Pouring Mulling Spices

Tweezing Pumpkins

Matching Silhouette to Leaf*

Sorting Small, Medium, & Large

I used an old necklace and cut the beads off. It worked perfectly!

Pink Series 1 (from Montessori Print Shop)

I’m so excited about this one! I introduced him to the first set in the pink series (I only used the ‘a’ words) and we began sounding out and blending the letters. I wasn’t expecting him to catch on so quickly, but he was blending the words and matching them on his own!

He didn’t quite capture the significance of what he’d done.

Sorting by Color

We always seem to have a surplus of broken crayons, so I turned it into a work!

If a crayon was missing its paper and he couldn’t tell the color, he used his “test” paper to see what color it was. He ended up testing almost every color. 🙂

I also brought out the object permanence box my husband and dad had made for Joey for Otto to use. He’s having a lot of fun and I’ve been able to get some cute pictures of his discovery that I’m saving for a separate post.

How’s your week been? What are you doing in your class?

These are such wonderful activities (and set up beautifully too, I might add)! I love the idea of adding a magnifying glass in with our nature basket – we will definitely have to do this!

Thanks, Nicole. The magnifying glass is a fun addition…though Joey hasn’t quite grasped how to use it properly. He smashes it right up to his eye!

Thanks, Anne. We had to take quite a few shots to get a good one, but it’s a milestone I wanted to capture!

Thanks for sharing these wonderful ideas. I love the fact that so many of them are from nature. It makes it easy for anyone to incorporate Montessori learning into their child’s lessons. I shared this on our facebook page today. http://www.facebook.com/MontessoriBuddy
