How to Make a No-Sew Child’s Apron

Here’s directions for a simple no-sew apron that a child can wear for messy activities.

Materials:

  • an old sheet (or fabric)
  • scissors
  • pencil

Directions:

1. With the sheet folded in half and half again, cut from the folded edge to the bottom. (The ends on top should both be folded.)

2. Cut the bottom fold. This will be the bottom opening of the apron.

3. At this point you should have a rectangle with one narrow folded edge and three open edges.

4. Fold the apron in half lengthwise.

5. At the top on the folded edge draw a 1/4 circle. This will be the neckline. You don’t want to cut too wide or the apron will fall off the child’s shoulders.

6. At this point the apron should look something like the picture below and be open on both sides and the bottom.

7. Going back to your original piece of fabric, cut a piece 2″ – 3″ in width starting from the fold. This will be the belt for the apron.

8. Your finished product should look something like this:

It’s a little rough around the edges, but you could easily hem, edge with bias tape, or serge the edges if you have a sewing machine (or serger) for a more polished look. You could even sew the belt onto the apron, which I may do when I have some extra time.
