Montessori Activities for Infants

Otto has reached the 3 month mark and is developing so well. It’s fun to see his growing expressions. The wide-eyed amazement that he has hands and they open and close. Cooing at the baby in the mirror or lying still moving his eyes back and forth following a bell, it’s amazing all that an infant learns to adapt in this big, wide world.

To stimulate his growth and interest in the world around him we’ve been giving Otto “activities” of his own:

Focusing on an Object

We often put an object in front of him to allow him to focus on one thing. Usually something in contrasting colors and not so big that he has to strain his neck to see. This happens during his tummy time. (In this picture he was engrossed in his brother’s work, Resurrection Eggs).

Following an Object

This could be an object you hold in your hand and slowly move back and forth or a mobile. We do a bit of both depending on where we are in the house.  Right now we use  a bell sewn to a ribbon that’s attached to a hook above his bed. For now he watches it as it moves and occasionally he will batch at it.

Grasping

We also give him an item that is small enough for him to hold in his hand, yet still safe. It’s more difficult for the younger infant if you use an object too large, bulky, or has too many extensions. We use the black and white rattle from PinkHouse Handworks.
