Here’s the work on our shelf these days for Joey. We’ve been staying with my parents for the last month, since we’re in the process of moving to Louisville and my resources for putting together activities for him is a bit limited. Our shelf isn’t really even a shelf, but a chest with the drawers taken out. It works though!

Most of these are cognitive activities for infants 6 to 9 months. Our social and language activities are more informal at this point. From left to right, here’s what’s there:

Soft Books: We had to put away the board books for now, because Joey’s doing some major teething and poor old Hop on Pop has been damaged quite a bit. We take the books out and read to him, but they’re not sitting out for him to grab whenever…at least for now.

In another part of the room we have a Treasure Basket. It’s supposed to be filled with 15 to 20 items that are found throughout the house and are made from materials other than plastic (for the most part). Here’s what we’ve got:

It seems Joey is entering a sensitive period for opening/closing things: books, cabinets, doors, drawers, etc. If he can move it, he’ll try to open or close it too. Yesterday he figure out how to open up one of the cabinets in the kitchen and then crawled right in. To my surprise he was able to go in and out without a problem and did it a couple of times.

I’m wondering what kind of activity I can make that will captialize on this interest.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated?

I think he’ll love some of the infant materials that your husband plans on making especially the Permanence Box with the drawer.
I love how you’re using the chest without the drawers. How ingenious mama’s can be when they must! 🙂
